Adolescents from Northern and Francophone Africa leave their tiny villages, temporarily or for good, and land on French territory. Called 'suitcase children,' they are thrown into often unstable families. They are still minors, and the French educational system is required to accept them -- even if they're in the country illegally. They must be brought up to speed before being integrated into general or specific areas of study. This is a year where they must find their bearings, adapt to French culture and determine what their future will be.

While some of them flirt with the limits, others are dropouts or in school reintegration, they are seventeen students to follow the Defense Class at the Japy vocational school in Lyon. An option of two hours per week provided by the military to these high school students in great difficulty. School and army, a rapprochement that may seem unlikely. In a society in loss of bearings, this course can allow these young people in lack of belonging to redefine "doing Nation". What values ​​can the army instil in them? What will be the real scope?

Les Grands Enfants does not tell a story in the traditional sense. Instead, it offers an honest image of people's dreams of change : people often unemployed, dissatisfied in some way with their work, or caught up in complicated social relationships. The film is set in Montreal.

Jardin d'enfants follows several groups at a daycare centre, focusing on the seemingly mundane daily lives of one- to five-year-olds: their interactions, confrontations, desires, curiosities, and frustrations. These candid composite images feed our insatiable curiosity about these unbridled beings with budding motor skills who are testing their brand-new senses and the constraints of their worlds, those individual bubbles in which they are firmly at the centre. Over time, socialization does its almost invisible work and behaviours develop, reminding us of all the effort and energy expended in shaping the social animals we are.

Gilbert has been released from the mental hospital, but it's clear that whoever signed the form was either irresponsible, stupid, or naive. He's still completely nuts. The chaos he perpetrates around him causes as much violence as he does himself, but nothing stops him in his quest to get to the ocean. Suzanne never was in a hospital for the insane, but perhaps she should have been. The energy that sparks between them leads to yet more mayhem and death, but nothing, nothing at all can prevent Gilbert from seeing the ocean.
